State Rep. Donni Steele on Tuesday slammed House Democrats for refusing to allow a vote on her bipartisan resolution to name May 2 as End Jew-Hatred Day in Michigan. A group of Legislators, including five House Democrats, introduced the resolution last week in response to ongoing antisemitic hate across Michigan.

“At this point, House Democrat leadership and these radical protestors are one and the same,” said Steele, R-Orion Township. “Protestors want to ignore the atrocities Hamas committed against the Israeli people last fall, and House Democrats want to ignore the reality that no protest calling for the destruction of Israel could be peaceful. We’re being blocked by a small group of radical members who aren’t willing to condemn antisemitism. I know there are Democrats that will support this resolution.”

Anti-Israel protestors interrupted the University of Michigan commencement ceremony last weekend in an attempt to draw attention to their efforts to see the United States completely abandon Israel. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, whose daughter was graduating, was even accosted by a protestor demanding she answer how she could support genocide. Protests have been ongoing across the country, disrupting classes and small businesses, including on many Michigan campuses.

Steele’s resolution mirrors a nearly identical bipartisan measure passed by the Michigan Senate last Tuesday.
