State Rep. Karl Bohnak last week testified before the House Health Policy Committee in support of his plan to expand mental health services in Michigan. House Bill 4591 would admit Michigan into the Counseling Compact, which would allow licensed professional counselors (LPCs) in member states to practice across state lines, both in person and via telehealth.

“My plan would expand access to care by clearing the way for qualified professionals to practice in our state, which will especially benefit our underserved communities,” said Bohnak, R-Deerton. “Other compact agreements have proven to be successful for other medical professionals. Allowing counselors the same opportunity would be one step forward in tackling Michigan’s rising mental health problem.”

The plan remains in the House Health Policy Committee awaiting a potential vote.
